The Perse Upper School is an independent school for pupils in Years 7 to 13 located between Hills and Long Road in the south of the city of Cambridge.
Saunders Boston Architects were initially appointed directly by The Perse School to provide a range of additional indoor sports facilities which would include a 5 court Sports Hall, Climbing and Abseiling centre and a 25m swimming facility for their 1,200 pupils.
The new sports centre was designed as three core areas; a ‘wet’ side containing a pool and associated changing, a ‘dry’ side containing a sports hall and climbing hall, and a central street that provides link and spectator spaces between all of the facilities.
The swimming pool is a deck level six-lane, 25m short course pool suitable for everything from lane swimming to learning to swim and beyond. The Dry Side Sports Hall can accommodate 5-A Side football, Netball, Basketball, Hockey and Indoor Cricket.
The street provides entrance and reception to the building whilst linking all of the sports facilities in terms of access and viewing.
