SBA were appointed through RIBA Stages 1 – 6 to design and offer our Architectural services on our third project for Fordham Abbey estate. The new Shinto Shrine is a place of worship within the gardens of the estate that follows Japanese traditions and customs.
The Shrine was designed using elements of traditional Japanese architecture, with a combination of traditional construction methods. The oak frame structure became a prominent aspect of this design, both internally and externally.
The Shrine is a harmonious space, which utilizes a unique architectural style and implements simple details that adds visual interests. Its siting within the traditional Japanese Dojima Gardens completes the journey for visitors with a backdrop of mature evergreen trees.
