Saunders Boston developed the designs and specifications for both the refurbishment of Bath Leisure and the new Keynsham Leisure Centre, as part of a DBOM scheme, working with Max Associates for the BaNES Council.
When the DBOM contract was tendered, Saunders Boston joined the GLL/Alliance Leisure Team to further develop the schemes through ISOS and ISDS stages to eventually win the contract.
The project was broken down into 3 main phases to allow the Centre to operate the majority of the services throughout the construction period and to ensure the key income-generating services were retained and refurbished first.
The main intervention in the building was to halve the size of the existing 8 court sports hall and create a 4-court hall on one side with a fitness suite above ten-pin bowling on the other. The existing squash courts were opened up to create a 900m2 trampoline park and soft play area.
The project had the added complexity of having to accommodate the match-day crowds for the Bath Rugby Club, whose ground is directly behind the leisure centre.
The project was completed in July 2018.
